Health officials with the World Health Organization (WHO) say vaccine hoarding by developed countries is “prolonging the pandemic.”

“The developed world and the industrialized world just doesn’t seem to get it. It really doesn’t,” Mike Ryan, executive director of the WHO Health Emergencies Programme, said during an interview on Tuesday.

Maria van Kerkhove, head of the WHO’s COVID-19 task force, added that the hoarding of vaccines in rich countries is prolonging suffering.

“If we had used the vaccines that were available differently, we would be in a very different situation right now, globally,” she said.

Vaccines are being shipped to poor countries through the COVAX initiative, but richer nations have come under fire for allegedly stockpiling COVID-19 shots as many underdeveloped countries struggle to obtain vaccines.
