The World Health Organization (WHO) is looking to fill a gap in the COVAX dose-sharing program left as a result of India suspending exports of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine as it faces an ongoing surge in cases, hospitalizations and deaths in the country.
"In the next few months we do not expect the Serum Institute (of India) to be able to supply the kind of volumes that were originally predicted, so we need to meet that gap," WHO chief scientist Soumya Swaminathan said Monday.
She said they are in talks with Europe and the United States, as well as other countries, to try and fill that gap and that the U.S. had committed to sharing 60 million doses they have.
Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that the COVAX program needs US$35 billion to US$45 billion to vaccinate adults next year against COVID-19.
