His surname derives from the Russian word for hope. And right now Boris Nadeezhdin is hoping the Kremlin will let him run for president against Vladimir Putin.

His call for an end to the war in Ukraine appears to have struck a chord with the Russian public.

Huge numbers queued up in temperatures as low as minus 40 to sign petitions supporting his candidacy. But has that made him too big a threat to be allowed to run?
