U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki defended the decision to launch air strikes against Iran-backed militias in Iraq and Syria, with Blinken saying it sends an "important and strong message." The U.S. military did not disclose whether it believed anyone was killed or injured, but officials said assessments were ongoing.

Psaki defended the move, saying it was "necessary, appropriate and deliberate action" that was justified by the constitution in self-defence of U.S. interests.

Two officials, speaking to Reuters on condition of anonymity, said Iran-baked militias had carried out at least five drone attacks against facilities used by U.S. and coalition personnel in Iraq since April.
