U.S. President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden welcomed some 30,000 kids to the White House on Monday for the annual Easter Egg Roll, which was put on hiatus for the past two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The First Lady's office earlier announced the theme was "Eggucation," with a focus on turning the South Lawn into a school community, with a talent show, reading nook and obstacle court. She said during remarks alongside her husband that she recognizes as a teacher that learning happens outside the classroom and they wanted to honour the spirit of education.
Biden also spoke about the happiness he had seeing families return to the White House after two years.
"This year we're finally getting together again and it's so special. It means so much to see and hear the children and all the families to show up to be here today," he said.
The tradition began in 1878, when former president Rutherford B. Hayes issued an order that if any children should come to the White House to roll their Easter eggs, they would be allowed to do so. It came after Congress passed a law in 1876 forbidding the grounds of Capitol Hill be used as a children's playground, according to the National Park Service. This was due to children rolling eggs and themselves down the hill for several years in the 1870s, causing a toll on the grounds.
