Egypt's foreign minister, Sameh Shoukry, says the situation unfolding for Palestinians in Rafah is "a catastrophe", and further conflict in the area would only "compound" the human death toll.

Mr Shoukry said his country did have communication channels with Israel over the border, but said that reports of Egypt preparing new fortifications or shelters on their side were "an exaggeration."
