Destin Jenkins, a history professor at the University of Chicago, said he didn’t think President Trump’s efforts to appeal to Black voters -- and Black men in particular -- by touting his administration’s record on the economy was resonating much with that specific part of the electorate. But, Jenkins noted that an estimated 13 percent of Black men voted for Trump in 2016, and there is some logic to his appeal. By showcasing athletes and celebrities such as former baseball player Darryl Strawberry at campaign events, said Jenkins, Trump targets converging interests of self esteem, self-importance, class interests and gender politics among some Black men. “But ultimately,” Jenkins said, he thought this approach would “have very little effect on the election.” He spoke with PBS NewsHour political reporter Daniel Bush on Oct. 22 ahead of the second and final presidential debate.
