Rep. Zoe Lofgren, D-Calif., questioned FBI Director Christopher Wray in a House Judiciary hearing Wednesday about the investigation into the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump on July 13 at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

Lofgren asked Wray whether the FBI had any insight into the motive of the shooter, specifically whether there was any indication the attack was politically motivated.

“I think it’s fair to say we do not yet have a clear picture of his motive,” Wray said. He added that the investigation is examining the shooter’s devices, physical residence, social media accounts and messages, but nothing has emerged.

“What I can say is that the shooter appears to have done a lot of searches of public figures in general,” Wray added.

The House Oversight Committee grilled Kimberly Cheatle, director of the U.S. Secret Service at the time of the deadly shooting, on Monday. Members on both sides of the aisle called for her resignation and she announced Tuesday she was stepping down. Cheatle repeatedly referred lawmakers seeking details to the investigation being carried out by the FBI.
