Using the state of Michigan as an example, Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., offered a portrait of how former President Donald Trump’s attacks on the 2020 election and states’ efforts to count and certify the votes led his supporters to believe “their victory was stolen.” On the second day of the former president’s second impeachment trial, Swalwell played video of Trump supporters showing up at the home of Michigan’s secretary of state, chanting “stop the steal” and calling her a “threat to democracy.”
Swalwell is one of the House impeachment managers making the case for why the Senate should convict Trump on a charge of inciting insurrection ahead of the attack on the U.S. Capitol. Trump was impeached by the House in January, while he was still in office.
