Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., speaks with PBS NewsHour anchor and managing editor Judy Woodruff on Feb. 13 about how senators might call witnesses in the impeachment trial for former President Donald Trump, who is charged with inciting the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

"It shouldn't be an unlimited number [of witnesses]. That's designed to be a political circus," Merkley said, sharing his personal preference. "Each side should get to call on an equal number of individuals to provide light and illumination on what exactly happened that day."

The Senate voted 55-45 to move forward with calling witnesses in the trial, but then moved to closing statements without a motion for further witnesses or evidence. Ultimately, the Senate will vote on whether to convict Trump on a charge of inciting an insurrection for his role in the Capitol attack.

Trump was impeached by the House in January, while he was still in office.
