WATCH: Mob insurrection of U.S. Capitol is 'American tragedy,' D.C. attorney general says

The District of Columbia Attorney General Karl Racine drew comparisons between the police response to Black Lives Matter protesters last summer to the response to the mob of President Donald Trump's supporters who breached the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday.

Protests and instances of violence in the aftermath of the police killing of George Floyd were met with heavily armed law enforcement, but on Wednesday, law enforcement seemingly struggled to gain control of Trump's supporters, some of who used force against law enforcement to push inside and storm the halls of the Capitol building.

The capitol breach was "unlawful, predictable and encouraged by none other than the President of the United States," Racine said. "What you had today was an attempted coup d'etat that may still be in process, because the president claims, falsely, that he won an election."

The protests and violence interrupted the process to count Electoral College votes cast for President-elect Joe Biden in the 2020 election.
