A lack of access to valid identification after life in prison can contribute to higher recidivism rates, PBS Newshour’s Gretchen Frazee reports. Without an ID, former prisoners may struggle to find a job or housing. “They’re going to turn to however they can get their needs met, and sometimes that can be illegal,” Frazee notes. Speedy access to identification documents is an important step in preventing recidivism, but access to those documents is not always easy, especially during a pandemic.
