Florida Rep. Byron Donalds spoke Monday at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, two days after an assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania.

The suspected shooter, who was killed by law enforcement, killed one person and seriously injured two.

Donalds recounted how his single mother and grandmother worked to pay for his private school education despite relying on government assistance. He advocated for school choice, or allowing parents to send their children to private and charter schools with the support of public funds.

“Donald Trump believes every parent deserves a choice and every child deserves a chance. And in November when Donald Trump is elected our nation's 47th president, we will make sure all America's children get that chance,” Donalds said.

During the convention, delegates will adopt a party platform and Trump will formally accept the Republican nomination for president. On Monday, Trump named Sen. J.D. Vance of Ohio as his running mate.

The Republican National Convention kicks off Monday, July 15, in Milwaukee against the backdrop of an apparent assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump this weekend.
