Bola Tinubu was declared the winner of Nigeria’s presidential election. Despite fending off his challengers, Tinubu earned only 37% of the vote — less than any previous president in the country.

Tinubu will succeed President Muhammadu Buhari. Once he takes the office in May, Tinubu will face several challenges plaguing Africa’s most populated country, including endemic corruption, extremist attacks, inflation, unemployment and poverty.

One of the country’s richest politicians, the president-elect faced allegations of corruption as recently as 2021.

Footage for this video came from the Associated Press and Reuters.

This video was produced and edited by Julia Griffin, Yasmeen Alamiri, Nicole Ellis and Matt Rasnic.
