In a historic decision, the Supreme Court ruled Monday that former presidents have some immunity from criminal prosecution for “official acts” in office, no matter their “politics, policy, or party.” But the court stipulated that that protection doesn’t cover every action taken by a president.
This decision may further delay the Washington criminal case on charges that former President Donald Trump plotted to overturn the 2020 presidential election.
During remarks late Monday at the White House, President Joe Biden said the court's decision "almost certainly means that there are virtually no limits on what a president can do."
"This is a fundamentally new principle," Biden said, "and it's a dangerous precedent because the power of the office will no longer be constrained by the law, even including the Supreme Court of the United States."
