The U.S. Supreme Court (SCOTUS) Monday rejected former president Trump’s claim of immunity on criminal charges for alleged efforts to undo his loss in the 2020 presidential election on Monday.

Despite this decision, SCOTUS says former presidents have absolute immunity from prosecution for official actions taken in the oval office, but not for unofficial acts.

Monday's opinion delays an already long-delayed election subversion case against Trump, meaning it's unlikely to go to trial before the presidential election in November.

As Global’s Reggie Cecchini explains, the case could disappear entirely If Trump wins the White House again.
