Malawi Vice President Saulos Klaus Chilima was among 10 people killed after a tragic plane crash on Monday morning, according to President Lazarus Chakwera.

During a flight to Mzuzu for a funeral, the plane carrying Chilima was diverted back to Lilongwe due to bad weather conditions and low visibility, and later crashed. “Despite the track record of the aircraft, and the experience of the crew, something terrible went wrong,” Chakwera said during a national address on Tuesday.

Upon discovery of the plane, near Chikangawa forest, officials confirmed all 10 passengers – including former first lady Shanil Dzimbiri – were killed on impact. The military is working to bring the remains back to the capital, according to Chakwera.

“Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima was a good man, a devoted father and husband, a patriotic citizen who served his country with distinction, and a formidable vice president,” Chakwera said of his colleague. “I consider it one of the greatest honours of my life to have had him as my deputy and counsellor for the past four years. And his passing is a terrible loss,” he added.
