Health minister Maria Caulfield has suggested that voters who decided not to participate in the local elections would still come out to support the Conservatives in the next general election.

Speaking to Sky News, Ms Caulfield admitted she found last week's Tory losses at the ballot box - particularly the loss of Andy Street as West Midlands mayor - "very disappointing".

However, she maintained that voting at a general election would follow a "very different" pattern and voters were simply using the local elections to show they were "unhappy about certain things".
