Victoria Atkins: Conservative defectors had 'their own reasons for going'

Health Secretary Victoria Atkins has faced questions on the unusually high number of Conservative defectors to Labour.

Trevor Phillips put to her that only eight MPs have ever gone from the Tories to Labour, but four of those happened in this parliament.

She said: "Well, I'm not going to comment on the individuals. They will have had their own reasons for going."

Ms Atkins also described it as a "great surprise" that "such a hard-right Conservative politician" such as Natalie Elphicke should defect to Labour.
