Ukrainian residents on Thursday poured scorn on Russian President Vladimir Putin's call for an Orthodox Christmas truce, describing it as 'utter hypocrisy'.

The Kremlin said Putin had ordered a ceasefire from midday on Friday after a call for a Christmas truce from Patriarch Kirill of Moscow, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church.

"They may not shoot tomorrow specifically but what difference does it make? It is Christmas Day so they are not going to shoot tomorrow, does it make them good Christians? It is absurd," a foreign fighter in Ukraine said.

Meanwhile, U.S. President Biden remarked that Putin is "trying to find some oxygen" by floating the 36-hour ceasefire.
