Several U.S. states on the East Coast are preparing for heavy snow and difficult driving conditions Sunday as a storm system began to bring rough weather to states like Maryland and New York.

A powerful winter storm has made its way across the country from California and has buried places like Illinois, Pennsylvania and Virginia under several inches of snow, with many working to shovel their way out.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and Baltimore, Maryland Mayor Brandon Scott each warned residents not to travel outside unless absolutely needed. Both New Jersey and New York state each declared emergencies ahead of the wintry weather.
