The US has discovered its first case of the Omicron strain of COVID-19 in a man in California who had returned from South Africa on November 22.
Fully vaccinated, his condition is said to be mild but improving, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The Biden administration says it does not intend to impose further lockdowns but will ramp up vaccinations and testing.
More than 24 countries around the world have detected the mutation.
