The US, Philippines and Japan have begun joint naval drills for the first time, in the strategically important South China Sea. They're being held in waters off the Bataan province of the Philippines, and will last a week. They include maritime law enforcement training and search-and-rescue missions.

The nations are boosting how they cooperate to deter growing Chinese assertiveness. Beijing claims large maritime regions that overlap the exclusive economic zones of other nations - including the Philippines.
