One of Georgia’s top election officials, Gabriel Sterling, on Monday said the call between Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger and U.S. President Donald Trump was "not normal," in his opinion. He went on to say "nobody I know who would be president would do that to a secretary of state."
In the phone call Saturday, Trump repeatedly cited disproven claims of fraud and raised the prospect of "criminal offence" if officials did not change the vote count, according to a recording of the conversation obtained by multiple news outlets including the Associated Press.
Raffensperger and other Georgia officials are heard pushing back repeatedly against the president's assertions, telling him he's relying on debunked theories and, in one case, selectively edited video.
The call has resulted in swift criticism from Democrats and some Republicans, with two Democratic members calling on FBI Director Christopher Wray to investigate the call, and one lawmaker saying he would move a resolution in the House of Representatives to censure the president.
During Monday's press conference, Sterling also said he was not aware of any investigation into the call by any state legal officials.
Sterling went through what he called “new” claims about election fraud, saying things like ballot shredding were not occurring. He also addressed a question asked by Trump in a controversial phone call with Raffensperger, in which he questioned if parts in Dominion voting machines were being “changed,” something Sterling said is “not a real thing” nor were machines hacked. He also debunked the theory that Raffensperger had a brother named “Ron” who works for Chinese company Huawei, saying it’s not real.
He also discussed various numbers claimed by Trump and various people connected to him in relation to the 2020 presidential election and debunked the numbers, line-by-line, including claims about underage voting, felons casting ballots and people who voted without being registered.
