U.S. President Joe Biden said Wednesday that he and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy had tapped senior members to negotiate on their behalf as talks continue over the debt ceiling.

The president said his meeting with Congressional leaders on Tuesday was “productive” and reiterated his previous statements that the U.S. would not default on its debts. He said such an outcome would be “catastrophic” for the American economy.

Biden added that he has cut short his trip to Asia to ensure he will be back on U.S. soil in time for any agreement to be finalized.
