U.S. President Joe Biden spoke about the debt ceiling while attending the G7 Summit in Hiroshima, Japan on Sunday. The president called on Republican leaders again to move towards a deal and listed several of the GOP's proposals which he considered to be too extreme.

But he remained optimistic about reaching a deal saying “I think we can reach an agreement.”

Meanwhile, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy commented on the negotiations in Washington, D.C. on Sunday saying that he had a "productive" call with Biden, and said he and the president and their staffs plan to meet Monday afternoon.

McCarthy said he wants to spend less money than what was spent last year and added that "nothing has been agreed to.”
