US health authorities are reporting that nearly three-quarters of all US coronavirus infections over the past week are from the Omicron strain.
New York State has reported a record number of cases for three days in a row and a state of emergency has been declared in Washington, DC because of the surge.
President Joe Biden will address the COVID-19 crisis later on Tuesday and is expected to make a case for expanding the vaccination and testing programme.
