U.S. law enforcement officials have arrested two New York residents for allegedly operating a Chinese “secret police station” in Manhattan’s Chinatown neighbourhood, the Department of Justice announced on Monday.

Liu Jianwang, 61, and Chen Jinping, 59, face charges of conspiring to act as an agent of China’s government without informing U.S. authorities, and obstruction of justice, prosecutors said. They are expected to appear in federal court in Brooklyn federal court later on Monday.

Prosecutors said Lu sought to persuade an individual considered a fugitive by China to return home in 2018, prosecutors said. That individual reported being harassed and threatened, prosecutors said.

Officials said the case is part of a broader effort by the Justice Department to crack down on Chinese government attempts to harass dissidents and stifle free speech in the U.S.

Principal deputy assistant attorney general for national security David Newman, U.S. attorney Breon Peace for the Eastern District of New York, assistant director of the FBI New York field office Michael J. Driscoll, and assistant director of the FBI Washington field office David Sundberg delivered the press conference.
