The Pentagon's undersecretary of defense for policy Colin H. Kahl announced a new aid package including cluster munitions for Ukraine on Friday, taking questions and addressing concerns after. The $800M package of controversial weapons is intended to help Ukraine push back Russian forces entrenched along the frontlines amid their ongoing war, according to Kahl.

"We want to make sure that the Ukrainians have sufficient artillery to keep them in the fight in the context of the current counteroffensive," Kahl said.

Kahl also addressed humanitarian concerns brought upon by this announcement, ensuring press his confidence in the effectiveness of the U.S.'s munitions, as well as Ukraine's commitment to post-conflict demining efforts to mitigate any potential harm to Russian civilians.

"I'm as concerned about the humanitarian circumstance as anybody," the Pentagon official said. "But the worst thing for civilians in Ukraine is for Russia to win the war. And so it's important that they don't."
