UNSC slams North Korea for “unlawful” weapon development after recent ICBM launches

The United Nations (UN) Security Council held an emergency meeting on Monday, after North Korea tested a new solid-fuel intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) on Friday that experts say would ease the way for missile launches with little warning, part of an increase in its military activities in recent weeks.


"Let me be clear, our lawful efforts to defend against the DPRK's repeated escalatory actions do not in any way justify the DPRK's unlawful behaviour," U.S. ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield said.

Japan's UN ambassador Ishikane Kimihiro added that “it is my — and should be our — greatest regret that we come to this chamber again to discuss North Korea. Since the start of this year, the security council [has] convened to discuss North Korea’s unlawful development of nuclear weapons and their means of delivery every month.”

South Korea, the U.S. and Japan staged joint naval missile defence exercises the same day to improve responses to North Korean threats, as Pyongyang accused Washington of ramping up "nuclear blackmail" with military drills.
