North Korean state television broadcasted the video of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) launch on Saturday and a statement from leader Kim Jong Un pledging to counter U.S. nuclear threats with nuclear weapons.
The isolated country tested the Hwasong-17 ICBM on Friday, a day after warning of "fiercer military responses" to Washington beefing up its regional security presence including nuclear assets.
In the heavily-produced launch video with dramatic music and video effects, leader Kim Jong Un also appeared with his daughter for the first time. Photographs showed him hand-in-hand with his unnamed daughter overseeing the launch and later, celebrating with his wife and sister as well as officials.
University of North Korean studies professor Yang Moo-jin said that the Friday launch made up for the failure on Nov. 3 and showed the North's technology is improving. “Also in terms of military strategy, it was intended to prove that they would go with real action, instead of empty words, when it comes to the extended deterrence stance by South Korea, USA and Japan,“ he said.
