Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) held a press conference on Monday following a meeting with the UN General Assembly.

"UNRWA is facing a deliberate and concerted campaign to undermine its operations, and ultimately end them," Lazzarini told the assembly, following allegations from Israel that UNRWA employed over 450 "military operatives" from Hamas and other armed groups, and that 12 of them were involved in the fatal Oct. 7 attacks in south Israel that left more than 1,200 dead and the capture of roughly 240 hostages.

Echoing concerns that UNRWA could face "imminent collapse" during the press conference, Lazzarini said "there is a need to urgently facilitate the political solution that would bring peace to the Palestinian and Israeli [people]."

Israel's claims have resulted in 16 countries, including Canada, pressing pause on their funding to UNRWA. Despite the accusations from Israel of UNRWA’s involvement in the fatal attacks, they have yet to show proof, according to Lazzarini.

He expressed that his primary concern was "to resolve the financial crisis," so UNRWA can "continue to deliver on [its] mandate" and "lifesaving operation in Gaza."
