Zaheer Janjua, the High Commissioner of Pakistan to Canada, spoke Tuesday about the ongoing "unprecedented" floods hitting his country, saying they were facing a "very, very hard time" with more than 1,100 people killed and over 3,500 people injured. More than 33 million people have been affected by the flooding.

He also said the United Nations had launched its flood response plan, which would raise $160.3 million for the country.

Janjua added he would like to see Canada participate in the relief and reconstruction efforts, adding he had no doubt joint efforts from Canada would have a good impact.

The monsoon rains have been pouring down for the past eight weeks, since June, devastating a country already trying to revive a struggling economy.

More than one million homes have been damaged or destroyed in the past two-and-a-half months, displacing millions of people, with about a half million living in organized camps and others having to find their own shelter.

The United Nations and Pakistan issued an appeal Tuesday for $160 million in emergency funding to help the millions impacted.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the floods had destroyed crops and his government was considering importing wheat to avoid any shortage amid the worst flooding in history. A national emergency has also been declared.
