The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) met on Friday for a briefing on the maintenance of peace and security in Ukraine, at the request of the U.S. and Albania delegations. U.S. ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield condemned the “barbaric” Russian attacks on Ukraine’s eastern front, as Russian ambassador Vasily Nebenzya characterized the UN gathering as a “hypocrisy fair.”

During the meeting, Thomas-Greenfield also demanded Russia cooperate in the Black Sea Grain Initiative, while UN Undersecretary-General Rosemary Di Carlo said that the number of recorded attacks on healthcare facilities in 2022 was at a record high.

On Friday, Russia's Defence Ministry claimed its forces had taken control of Soledar, northeast of Bakhmut, which would be its first major gain after half a year of military setbacks. Ukraine, however, continued to say fighting was still taking place.

The claim by Russia comes days after ultra-nationalist Russian mercenary group Wagner, run by an ally of President Vladimir Putin outside the normal chain of military command, had also claimed to have taken Soledar after days of intense fighting that left it strewn with Ukrainian dead.
