The UN Security Council on Monday voted unanimously to approve what some see as a watered-down statement strongly opposing Israel's continued construction and expansion of settlements. It was the first action the U.S. has allowed the security council to take against its ally Israel in six years.

The vote came after negotiations by the Biden administration prevented a legally-binding resolution that would've demanded a halt to the settlements. The deal reached saw a weaker presidential statement that is not legally binding, according to reports. The U.S. was also able to convince both Israel and the Palestinians to agree in principle to a six-month freeze in any unilateral action they might take.

The deal also avoided a potential diplomatic crisis, as the U.S. almost certainly would have vetoed the planned resolution.
