UN human rights chief condemns Iran's decision to execute prisoner arrested during protests

Volker Turk, the United Nations high commissioner for human rights, condemned Iran's execution of a man who had been convicted for a crime allegedly committed during recent nationwide protests held in reaction to the death of Mahsa Amini.

Amini died in September after falling into a coma while in the custody of Iran's morality police. She had been held for not wearing her hijab properly, labelled as "inappropriate attire," according to the rigidly enforced Islamic Penal Code. Her death sparked widespread protests in defiance of the Iranian government.

Turk called on Iran to institute a moratorium on the death penalty, saying that the execution was "clearly designed to send a chilling effect" to other protesters.

He also spoke about China's treatment of Uyghurs and other Muslims in its Xinjiang region, saying he wanted to engage with Beijing over the findings of a report that found China's treatment may constitute crimes against humanity.

Afghanistan was briefly touched on by Turk as well, with him saying the "continued systematic exclusion" of women and girls "deprives the country as a whole" of the benefits these groups can bring to the country through their contributions.
