World leaders are gathering in New York for a series of meetings, including the UN General Assembly. Countries are being urged to salvage their promises to help the world's poorest and address major challenges.
Ahead of the meetings, climate activists rallied in New York and around the world demanding more action to halt global warming. Climate change is on the agenda at the UN, as well as the so-called Sustainable Development Goals. Progress toward improving the environment and health are far off track, and in some cases are going backwards.
The UN says the sustainability goals themselves need a global rescue plan. World leaders will meet this week to try and revive those ambitious goals.
