Assembly of First Nations delegation to the Vatican honoured at general assembly | FULL

The delegation of Assembly of First Nations (AFN) members who were sent to the Vatican earlier this year to meet with Pope Francis to speak with him about Canada's residential schools were honoured on Tuesday during the first day of AFN's annual general assembly.

The ceremony came after a majority of First Nations chiefs in Canada voted against the controversial suspension of AFN National Chief RoseAnne Archibald following an investigation into workplace harassment complaints against her by four staff got underway.

The group of honoured delegates included Kukpi7 Chief Rosanne Casimir of Tk’emlúps te Secwepemc First Nation, AFN Northwest Territories Regional Chief Gerald Antoine, as well as residential school survivors Phyllis Googoo and Marlene Cloud.

Following meetings with AFN, Métis and Inuit representatives, Pope Francis issued a formal apology from the Vatican in front of the delegations for the deplorable conduct of church members involved in residential schools.

He is expected to visit Canada this summer, and deliver an apology for the Roman Catholic Church's role in residential schools during the journey. His program for the trip also includes a visit to the site of a former Alberta residential school with survivors, according to the Vatican.

Pope Francis' trip will begin July 24 in Edmonton, Alta. and end July 29 in Iqaluit.
