Kyiv residents cleaned glass shards from damaged windows on Monday after Russian strikes on Ukraine’s capital.

Russia launched its most widespread air strikes since the start of the Ukraine war on Monday, raining cruise missiles on busy cities during rush hour and knocking out power and heat, in what President Vladimir Putin called revenge for a blown up bridge. Missiles tore into busy intersections, parks and tourist sites in the centre of the capital Kyiv.

"There was a strong explosion… I heard windows crumbling in this yard,” said Olena Shestakova, 65. She added that the windows in her flat were also damaged.

As glass from the shattered windows was laying on the ground in Kyiv's city centre, Mykola, 36, was protecting his dog's paws during a walk.

"We are walking him, so he does his things. The important thing is he doesn’t hurt his paw,” Mykola said. He said he came to visit his grandmother before the strike.

"We got lucky that the missile went into the ground probably, so there hasn't been a blast wave as strong,” Mykola said.
