In the first year-and-a-half of moving to Winnipeg, Ukrainian Mila Shykota learned English, secured a full-time job, and watched her daughter start kindergarten. She reflected on Friday about her journey to Winnipeg with her husband and daughter.

"I was impressed with how big the Ukrainian community is in Manitoba," she said, adding that moving to Winnipeg was an easy choice as her husband attended the University of Manitoba. Shykota hopes her mom will be able to make the same journey she did to Winnipeg.

"Per capita, we have the most Ukrainians here in Winnipeg," said Ukrainian Canadian Congress of Manitoba Provincial Council president Joanne Lewandowski. "By the end of March, we are expecting 7,000 people to the province of Manitoba"

"It is a pleasure to work for our brothers and sisters who chose to come to Manitoba — but it's not an easy journey," Lewandowski said.
