Britain’s Foreign Minister James Cleverly said Saturday that the country would temporarily recall its ambassador to Iran after the execution of British-Iranian national Alireza Akbari.

The Iranian Judiciary’s Mizan news agency reported the execution of the former Iranian deputy defence minister, who had been sentenced to death on charges of spying for Britain.

“We are sending a clear message to the Iranian regime that we are watching closely what they do and will respond robustly to any actions that they take,” Cleverly said. “When I found out earlier this morning from the officials in Tehran that this had taken place, of course, I was filled with revulsion."

Britain had declared the case of Akbari, who was arrested in 2019, to be politically motivated. Both France and the U.S. have also spoken out against the execution. The execution is expected to further worsen Iran’s long-strained relations with the West, which have deteriorated since talks to revive its 2015 nuclear deal hit a deadlock and Tehran unleashed a deadly crackdown on protesters last year.
