A leading government scientific advisor has warned that unless ministers act soon to curb soaring Covid cases, the country could face another "lockdown Christmas".

So far, Boris Johnson has insisted there is "nothing on the cards" to indicate such drastic steps are necessary for England, but some local authorities are already bringing in stricter measures of their own, advising more mask wearing and working from home.
