Dominic Cummings, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s former top aide, told a parliamentary committee on Wednesday that Johnson would have been willing to have himself injected with the novel coronavirus, so skeptical was he that COVID-19 posed a threat.

In a blistering attack on the Johnson administration, Cummings also told lawmakers the government was completely unprepared for the worst public health crisis in decades and that ministers, including the prime minister, were on holiday in February 2020.

Cummings, who left his role as Johnson's senior adviser in late 2020, said health minister Matt Hancock should have been fired for lying in government meetings on COVID-19, and confirmed that he had heard the prime minister say "let the bodies pile high" when discussing whether he should lock down Britain again late last year.

Cummings apologized for the mistakes the government made in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, saying ministers and officials failed the public.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said Wednesday that he takes “full responsibility for everything that has happened,” but rejected the criticism from Cummings, saying he does not accept his accusation that government inaction led to unnecessary deaths.
