A memorial service was held at the iconic Westminster Abbey in London, England on Monday in memory of U.K. MP David Amess, who was stabbed to death on Friday as he met with constituents, in an attack that has fueled concern about politicians' safety in the UK and the level of vitriol directed at them.

Hundreds gathered to remember the legislator, who was recalled for his dedication to public service and "charity of heart."

"In this great tragedy, there is a unanimous conviction amongst all who knew him that Sir David was of the best," Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby said during the service.

"Contributions in both the House of Commons and the House of Lords have spoken of his exceptional character."

The popular legislator served in Parliament for almost 40 years.
