Ontario's former lieutenant-governor David Onley was remembered on Monday as a tireless advocate, role model, man of faith and devoted family member during his state funeral at Yorkminster Park Baptist Church in Toronto, Ont. Lt.-Gov. Elizabeth Dowdeswell and Ontario Premier Doug Ford were among the dignitaries who delivered eulogies.

“A broadcaster who broke barriers, an advocate who lifted up those around him, a lieutenant-governor who served with distinction, and educator who inspired young minds and a human being with generosity of spirit. He was many things to many people,” Dowdeswell reflected in her tribute.

Onley, who emerged as a champion of disability rights both during and after his seven-year stint as Ontario’s 28th lieutenant-governor, died at age 72 on Jan. 14.

He used a motorized scooter throughout his life after contracting polio as a child, and was lauded by mourners for insisting on delivering the news when he worked at Citytv with his cane or scooter visible, and for championing accessibility rights for all.
