The death toll from wildfires in Turkey has increased to eight. Firefighting operations continue on the southern and western coast. The latest victims include a Turkish-German couple who were found in a house, local media reported. Hundreds have been injured in the blazes which are the worst in a decade. The flames have been fueled by high temperatures and the resulting dry conditions. Scientists point to global warming as pushing those conditions, but authorities also suspect arsonists behind some of the fires. Many people have lost everything.
At the popular holiday resort of Marmaris at the Aegean coast some residential areas and hotels had to be evacuated over the weekend, because the flames crept closer.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan visited the affected regions – and promised quick help. DW correspondent Julia Hahn reports from Manavgat in the Turkish province of Antalya.
