Voters were divided after Turkey’s incumbent President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was declared the winner in Sunday’s runoff election, giving him the mandate to rule until 2028.

Celebrations erupted among Erdogan’s supporters on Sunday evening, while a day later some Turkish residents expressed disappointment.

“I think it was an unjust election because the country is in a bad situation; I pray that he’s going to be good for everyone,” said one Turkish resident, Ceylan Ilhan.

“We had a different candidate in our hearts; someone who could really lead this country, but it didn’t work out. Let’s hope for the best.”

Erdogan must now confront skyrocketing inflation that has fueled a cost-of-living crisis and rebuild in the aftermath of a devastating earthquake that killed more than 50,000 people.
