The U.S. Senate will hold a trial for the 2nd impeachment of former president Donald Trump the week of Feb. 8, with the House to deliver the charge against him on Monday, Jan. 25. Trump is facing a charge of inciting an insurrection after his supporters stormed the Capitol building on Jan. 6, just a short time after he told them to "fight" his election defeat.

The Senate will be holding an unprecedented trial - no former president has ever been impeached and tried after leaving office - and it's left constitutional scholars mixed on whether the trial can take place, but Democrats have said it will happen.

Some Republicans have argued that a trial would be unconstitutional, while others believe the president should face repercussions following the Capitol riot.

If Trump is convicted by the Senate, a second vote could then be held to disqualify him from ever running for political office again. Sean Previl explains.
