U.S. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy criticized the indictment of former president Donald Trump on Thursday about charges for trying to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.

During a visit to Clovis, Calif., McCarthy said he believed the latest indictment was politically-motivated.

McCarthy compared Trump "questioning" the outcome of the 2020 election to doubts raised in earlier elections by Democrats Hillary Clinton and Al Gore.

Prosecutors say Trump illegally conspired with others to try to prevent Joe Biden's election victory from being certified by Congress. Trump pleaded not guilty to the charges on Thursday and is expected to mount a defence focused on the right to free speech under the Constitution's First Amendment.

Plus, outside the Washington, D.C., courthouse where Trump entered his not guilty plea on Thursday, protesters both for and against the former president rallied and reacted to the indictment.
