Trump shooting: America must not “go down this road” to political violence, Biden says

U.S. President Joe Biden addressed Americans from the Oval Office on Sunday in the wake of the assassination attempt on former president Donald Trump.

Biden said America “must not go down this road” toward political violence, adding that all Americans have the “responsibility” to cool down political rhetoric.

“There is no place in America for this kind of violence, for any violence – ever. Period. No exceptions. We can’t allow this violence to be normalized,” he said.

Biden said earlier on Sunday that he had directed the U.S. Secret Service to review all security measures for the Republican National Convention, which begins in Milwaukee on Monday.

Hours later, Audrey Gibson-Cicchino, the Secret Service’s coordinator for the convention said the weekend attack against Trump did not prompt any changes to the agency’s security plan for the event.
